The Remote Interview Setup That Survives Real Life at Home

The call starts before anyone asks a question. A dark room or the wrong microphone makes a strong answer hard to hear. You are allowed to interview from a home that has children in it. You are not served by hoping the connection works.

Room. Face a window or a lamp, not a window behind you. Camera at eye level. Headphones. Tell the people you live with the time, and set a snack and an activity before you join if a child will be home. This is logistics, not a confession.

The hour. Test on the same network, on the same laptop, at the same time of day as the interview. Home internet that is fine at noon can fail at 6pm when everyone is streaming. Join ten minutes early. Confirm the microphone is the headset. Close other calls. Keep the job description and three stories in a doc on the same screen, in a large font.

If a child walks in. "One second, I am closing the door." Then answer the question. Do not give a speech of apology. Do not narrate your guilt. A team that wants you to work from home will survive a human house. A team that punishes it was going to punish school pickup too.

Your questions. Overlap hours, how work is assigned, what the first month looks like, and whether they can hire you in your country. Those answers tell you whether the remote setup is real.

After. A short note that names one topic you discussed. Do not attach a new resume unless they asked.

If the technology fails

"I lost audio. I am switching to my phone." Then do it. Have the second link or the phone number written on paper, not only inside the calendar event you can no longer open. Charge the laptop. A hiccup is allowed. Vanishing is the problem.

If they ask for a long exercise with no time box, ask how long and whether it is paid. You can decline unpaid consulting. That is different from being unprepared to talk about your own work.
